November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know about 25.8 million children and adults in the US have diabetes?

7 million of these individuals go undiagnosed. Another 79 million individuals are prediabetic, and in 2010 there was 1.9 million new cases diagnosed in individuals 20 years and older. In 2007, diabetes was a contributor to 231,404 deaths.

Risk factors for diabetes include age, gender, race/ethnicity, activity level, and weight. Increasing age, being male and Hispanic or non-Hispanic black increases your risk for developing diabetes. Complications of diabetes include heart disease, hypertension, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy with possible amputation.
